“Port in the Storm”
(from NEW WAVES)
I want to be your port in the storm
But the water's getting awfully high
You need rescue, I want to protect you
We're hoping for a clearer sky
You are a lighthouse alone in the waves
I am drowning in a hurricane sea
Through the fog and spray, there's a flash in the grey
"Come to me, come to me, come to me..."
And every night when you have to be brave
Everyone else can say, "How beautiful!"
And you gotta stay bright
However you might feel like
Turning out your light for a while
I want to be your port in the storm
But the water's getting awfully high
You need rescue, I want to protect you
We're hoping for a clearer sky
Sometimes the basement floods
How long til we drown?
When you burn out and you have nothing left
And folks forget how long you were beaming
I will remember the day you shouted my way
"Don't be afraid. Stay with me. I ain't leaving."
I want to be your port in the storm
But the water's getting awfully high
You need rescue, I want to protect you
We're hoping for a clearer sky.

“blanket on the wall”
(from DAMN MONSTERS)
she’s a real thick brit with an accent that matches
watch her skimp dress split as she bats her eyelashes
your madonnas a medusa when she’s pouring you a single malt
playin w your gear shift pretty soon ur gonna stall.
i been hurtin hard like the wrath of the recession
i tumble into circumstance, this is depression
imma grown man kickin like a two year old baby
and i wanna stop the bleeding but i dont have any bandaids.
blanket on the wall keeps me dreamin
keeps the screams in
i keep writing but im fighting
and the blanket on the wall keeps the light out til it’s bright out
then i walk outside unless its right now.
Its a hairpin turn down to hatfield road
with your mind drawn in the quicksand
its time that you unload
the birthday party boyfriend just cant cut the mustard
but she puts her fingers to your lips tells you just to trust her
i say no no no i cant take you to my mother
you wont listen when your silent
you hate the wrath of others
i say no no no i am spinning plates of whiskey
and i’m running down a dream
tom petty’s gonna get me
blanket on the wall keeps me dreamin
keeps the screams in
i keep writing but im fighting
and the blanket on the wall keeps the light out til it’s bright out
then i walk outside unless its right now.
when the rain stops pouring there is light under the cover
the puddles on the sidewalk retreat into each other
the labelmaker magazine is full of contradiction
it is either time or timeout, either fact or fiction
and I got a pin from a friend he says i’ll see you in the summer.
but I got too many plans man I’ll disappoint you brother.
i bum a cigarette from a kid out by the heater
and he tells me it’s okay but I cry into the theater
i say no no no i have little left to offer
i can gove you good advice but it wont fill up your coffer
i say no no no give me one more cup of coffee
and i’ll climb up the mountain if these insects will get off me.
blanket on the wall keeps me dreamin
keeps the screams in
i keep writing but im fighting
and the blanket on the wall keeps the light out til it’s bright out
then i walk outside unless its right now.
she’s a hurricane hate quake, lysistrata backbreak
keep your appearances the girl is gonna kill you
she’s a tarantella wombat, thunder like a lion
if you need a place to sleep theres a bordello on the bayou
blanket on the wall keeps me dreamin
keeps the screams in
i keep writing but im fighting
and the blanket on the wall keeps the light out til it’s bright out
then i walk outside unless its right now.
“Fishing Henry”
(from ICU)
(GARY THE NURSE:)
OKAY HENRY IT’S TIME TO CHECK YOUR BAGS.
DAMN SWEETIE YOU GOT A LOT OF BAGS.
BAGS IN. BAGS OUT.
REPLACE EMPTY BAGS.
REMOVE FULL ONES.
THIS ARM. THAT LEG.
BOY, HEN YOU GOT A LOT GOING ON!
GET THE SWELLING DOWN.
GET THE HEART RATE UP.
AND PRESSURE, PRESSURE.
SO MUCH PRESSURE.
WHY ALL THE PRESSURE, HEN?
YOU KNOW YOU’RE GONNA GET WELL!
YOU’RE THE TALK OF THE ICU HEN
AND BELIEVE ME I DON’T MIND DISHING!
YOU SEE THAT POSTER THAT YOUR SON LEFT
WITH THE GRANDKIDS SMILING AND BIG FONT?
IT SAYS, “PAPA! WE WANT TO GO FISHING!”
FISHING HEN!
THEY WANT TO GO FISHING WITH YOU!
FISHING HEN! GO GIT EM!
THOSE POOR FISH THEY WON’T KNOW WHAT HIT EM!
NEW DRESSING ON THE PICC LINE
MORE BLANKETS ON THE EXTREMITIES
A LITTLE DANCING, HOW ABOUT A KICK LINE?
AND SOME OPTIMISM ABOUT REMEDIES
THE DOCS SAY YOU’RE VERY SICK
WELL HOW VERY PLASTIC, HOW VERY POLITIC.
BETWEEN YOU, ME, AND THIS IV
HONEY EVERYONE HERE THINKS OF YOU AS FAMILY
I’VE SEEN WORSE PEOPLE GET BETTER
AND I’VE SEEN BETTER PEOPLE GET WORSE
MOST FOLKS IN YOUR CONDITION
LEAVE HERE IN A HEARSE.
BUT IT’S A BIG UNIVERSE!
I KNOW I’M A NURSE, NOT A FANCY PHYSICIAN
BUT I’VE SEEN A LOT FOLKS AS A TECHNICIAN
AND WITH YOU I’VE GOT THIS PREMONITION
I’LL MAINTAIN MY DISPOSITION
NOT RAISE HOPES OR CAUSE SUSPICION
BUT I THINK THIS IS JUST YOUR INTERMISSION
AND FOR A SECOND ACT, YOU’LL NEED A MAGICIAN
SO WE’LL BOOST YOUR MEDS AND YOUR NUTRITION
GIVE YOU BREATH AND SWEET AMBITION
YOU’RE NOT SOME WASHED UP ROCK MUSICIAN
AND THIS IS NOT A ROAD TO PERDITION
YOU’RE HENRY RUSSELL, MAN ON A MISSION
KEEPER OF THE FAMILY ANGLING TRADITION
WE’LL GET YOU OUT OF BED, PART THE PARTITION
YOU’RE BACK ON THE BOAT IN A VEST AND A VISION!
FISHING HEN!
FISHING HENRY YOU GOTTA GO
FISHING HEN!
FISHING HENRY WHOA WHOA WHOA
I’VE SEEN WORSE PEOPLE GET BETTER
I’VE SEEN BETTER PEOPLE GET WORSE
MOST FOLKS IN YOUR CONDITION
LEAVE HERE IN A HEARSE.
BUT THAT’S NOT YOUR CURSE!
YOU’RE OFF ON ANOTHER EXPEDITION
HEAR THE PINE BOUGHS SWISH-SWISH-SWISHIN
YOU’RE OUT ON A LAKE
YOUR WIFE MADE A CAKE
THE KIDS ARE SPLISHIN
THE WORMS ARE SQUISHIN
AND YOU’RE TAKING EVERYONE FISHING!
FISHING, HENRY!
FISHING!
HENRY RUSSELL!
FISHING!
HEN, REMEMBER!
FISHING!
“Feelings Song”
(from The Forest of Feelings)
Little seeds, starting small
Turn to trees, strong and tall.
When I’m happy, or I’m sad
When I’m lonely or I’m mad
Every day and every night
The sun and stars will shine their light
On me
However I am feeling.
